Day or Night Monuments Tour by E-Cart

About this experience

You ride in an open-air electric cart, quiet and electric, with a live local guide and no more than 9 guests, per the listing. The route starts near Capitol Hill with the U.S. Capitol, rolls down the National Mall past the National Gallery of Art, the Natural History, Air and Space and American History museums and the National Museum of African American History and Culture, then swings round the Washington Monument and the Tidal Basin to the Jefferson Memorial, the MLK Memorial and the Lincoln Memorial. It comes back past the Korean War and Vietnam Veterans memorials to the White House, and ends where it began, at 500 5th St NW.

Time on foot is short and spread out. The listed itinerary has 7 photo stops: 5 minutes at the Capitol, 10 at the Washington Monument, 5 at the Tidal Basin, 5 at the Jefferson Memorial, 10 at the MLK Memorial, 10 at the Lincoln Memorial and 5 at the White House. That is about 50 minutes out of the cart in 2 hours, enough for the photo and a look, with the miles in between done for you. The Vietnam and Korean War memorials, the FDR Memorial and the Albert Einstein Memorial are pass-bys on the route, per the listing.

You choose a day, sunset or night departure. For the lit memorials, the sunset slot is the sweet spot: you start in daylight and finish with the monuments floodlit, which is how one guest describes it below. The guide and the cart are included; food, drinks and tips are not, per the listing. Everyone wears a seat belt, children need their own seat, and there is no eating, smoking or alcohol in the cart. Bring water and comfortable shoes, as the operator asks.

★★★★★

This was the perfect tour to see the monuments. We started while it was light out & ending with darkness. [...] I would do this again.

Tips before you book

  • Book the sunset departure if you can only do one: you get the Mall in the last light and the memorials lit by the end.
  • Bring a layer. The cart is open on all sides, which is lovely in June and cold in January, when lows average around 30 °F (-1 °C).
  • Sunset moves a lot through the year, from about 4:46 p.m. in early December to about 8:37 p.m. in late June, so check the times for your date.
  • Want to go back on foot later? Our night walking route covers the same memorials with distances.
