Opening hours, closures and the tree dates below come from the National Park Service, Recreation.gov and the official National Christmas Tree site, checked in November 2026. Sunset times are from the sunrise-sunset.org tables for Washington, DC, and the temperatures are NOAA's 1991 to 2020 normals for Reagan National Airport.
Winter has one real advantage for a night visit: you do not have to wait up for it.
The quick answer
Daylight saving time ended on 1 November 2026, and sunset in DC now falls between about 4:46 p.m. and 5:10 p.m. until mid-January. The memorials stay open 24 hours and are lit after dark, with rangers on duty until 10 p.m. The National Christmas Tree Lighting is on 3 December 2026, and a light show at the tree runs from 7 December to 1 January. Dress for 30s to 40s°F at night, and pick a tour with a heated vehicle between stops.
What time does it get dark in DC in winter?
Early. Sunset is at about 4:54 p.m. in mid-November and 4:46 p.m. in early December, the earliest of the year, then creeps back to 6 p.m. by the end of February.
Clocks went back to Eastern Standard Time on 1 November, and that knocked an hour off the evening. By 6 p.m. the Lincoln Memorial is glowing in its chamber and the Washington Monument stands floodlit over the Reflecting Pool. A night tour that starts after dinner still runs in full dark, and a 5 p.m. start does too.
Twilight lasts a short while after sunset, and that half hour of blue sky behind the lit monuments is the light photographers wait for. In December you get it at about 5 p.m.

| 28 February | 6:00 p.m. | 2026 table |

Are the DC monuments open at night in winter?
Yes. The memorials of National Mall and Memorial Parks are open 24 hours a day all year, free, and the major ones are lit after dark. Rangers are on duty from 9:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily.
The exceptions are the inside spaces. The Washington Monument is open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. with a last ticket at 4 p.m., so in winter you see it lit from outside, not from the top. The new Lincoln Memorial Undercroft museum, opened on 25 June 2026, keeps evening hours until 8 p.m. in winter according to the Washingtonian; it needs a timed ticket, so check Recreation.gov for your date. More on the hours in our guide to the monuments at night.
Getting around after dark is easy. Metro runs until about midnight Sunday to Thursday and about 2 a.m. on Friday and Saturday nights, and the Smithsonian station sits right on the Mall at 12th Street. Mall parking meters charge $2.30 an hour from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. only, and Hains Point in East Potomac Park has about 520 free spaces.

Check dates for the Monuments by Moonlight trolleyWhen is the National Christmas Tree lighting in 2026?
On Thursday 3 December 2026, on the Ellipse in President's Park. Tickets went out by a free lottery on Recreation.gov, which closed on 4 November; winners hear on 12 November.
Each winner may get up to five tickets, per the National Park Service. If you missed the lottery, come after the lighting: the official National Christmas Tree site promotes a new light show from 7 December to 1 January and tells visitors to “stay after dark”. The National Park Service says there is no fee to visit the tree site, and that more details on visiting the 2026 site are still to come.
The tree stands south of the White House, and the Ellipse is also where you get the south view of the White House at night. The Secret Service may close the Ellipse or Lafayette Park without notice; if the Ellipse is shut, the closest south view is from Constitution Avenue.

How cold is DC at night in winter, and what should you wear?
Cold enough to plan for. Average lows run 35°F (1°C) in December and 30°F (-1°C) in January, and the open lawns of the Mall let the wind through.
The National Park Service puts it simply: in colder months, layer up and check the weather on the day. For a night at the memorials that means:
- A warm hat and gloves: you will take them off for photos and want them back fast.
- Shoes with a tread: the NPS warns that some monument stones get slippery when wet, so stay on the paths.
- Layers under a windproof coat, easy to open on a heated bus or van.
- A charged phone: cold drains batteries, and the van tour carries phone chargers.
Dehydration is not just a summer problem either; the NPS says you can dehydrate in any season. Carry water, since memorial stops are short.
| Month | Average high | Average low |
|---|---|---|
| November | 58°F (15°C) | 42°F (5°C) |
| December | 49°F (9°C) | 35°F (1°C) |
| January | 45°F (7°C) | 30°F (-1°C) |
| February | 48°F (9°C) | 32°F (0°C) |

Which night tours are best in winter?
The ones with a warm vehicle between the stops: the trolley, the small-group van, the night bus and the coach. You still walk in at the memorials, then get back out of the wind.
Monuments by Moonlight gives you two 30-minute stops on foot, one at the MLK and FDR memorials and one at the Lincoln, Vietnam and Korean War memorials, then rides on past the White House, the Jefferson Memorial and the Capitol. The small-group van seats 12, is climate-controlled and carries umbrellas and bottled water; you get out at most sites. Dianne (Jun 2026): “He also knew how to quickly get us in and out at each monument stop!”
The night bus has a winter detail worth knowing: its convertible buses switch from open tops to glass tops between October and March, per the listing, so you keep the view of the lit monuments overhead without the cold air. Prefer to walk? The sunset walking tour is 2 hours on foot, and in winter it runs early in the evening; check the times for your date.

Explore the small-group night tour Tour detailsIs a winter evening a good time to see the memorials?
Yes, if you dress for it. The memorials are lit early, the paths are quieter than in spring and summer, and you can see the main ones and still be at dinner by 8 p.m.
The National Park Service calls the early evening hours beautiful and tranquil, and says of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial that visiting after dark completely changes its character. In winter that hour comes before dinner. The Korean War statues in the low light and Lincoln above the Reflecting Pool look the same in December as in June, with fewer people between you and them.
Guests on the trolley say it plainly. Dawn (Apr 2026): “[...] the monuments are beautiful lit up at night.” Two days you cannot book it: Thanksgiving (26 November) and Christmas Day. Every GetYourGuide night tour here has free cancellation up to 24 hours before, which helps when a cold front moves in. For the walk itself, see our walking route and our Mall safety guide.
