Booking choice: The sunset walking tour, from $39 per person. Check dates Tour details
You can walk to every major memorial on the National Mall in one evening. They are free, they are open 24 hours a day, and park rangers are on duty at them until 10 p.m. What catches people out is the distance. The National Park Service puts it plainly: visiting all or some of the monuments on the same day is quite a bit of walking.
This guide gives you a loop that starts and ends near Metro, with the memorials in a sensible order, real distances from official and published sources, and the practical bits: restrooms, water, shoes, wet stone, parking rules after dark, and when a guide and a ride make more sense.
The quick answer
Yes, you can walk to all the main memorials at night. The loop from the Washington Monument through the World War II, Lincoln, Vietnam and Korean War memorials, then round the Tidal Basin past MLK, FDR and Jefferson, is about 3.1 miles (5 km): about 1 hour 15 minutes of walking, 2.5 to 3 hours with stops. Start from Smithsonian station on the Mall. Prefer a guide? The sunset walking tour covers the west end on foot in 2 hours, from $39.
Can you walk to all the monuments in DC?
Yes. The main memorials sit in a loop along the west half of the National Mall and around the Tidal Basin, all joined by paved paths, and all are open 24 hours a day, free.
Two things shape a night walk. The memorials are spread out: the Mall alone is about 2 miles from the Lincoln Memorial to the U.S. Capitol, per the National Park Service, and the Tidal Basin adds a second loop to the south. And the Metro stations are at the edges. On the east side, Smithsonian station opens right onto the Mall at 12th Street. On the west end, Foggy Bottom-GWU, Farragut West and Arlington Cemetery are all at least a mile from the Lincoln Memorial, in the park service's own words.
What you cannot do at night is go up the Washington Monument. It opens 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. with timed tickets, so after dark you see it lit from the outside. Every other stop on this route is an open-air memorial, or a chamber like Lincoln's and Jefferson's that you can walk into at any hour. Our guide to what is open at night has the full hours.

What is a good self-guided route for the monuments at night?
Start at Smithsonian station, walk west to the Washington Monument and the World War II Memorial, along the Reflecting Pool to the Vietnam and Lincoln memorials, then the Korean War Memorial, and finish round the Tidal Basin: MLK, FDR and Jefferson.
This order keeps the long views in front of you and puts the quietest stretch, the Tidal Basin, at the end. Stop by stop:
| Stop | Where | What to look for after dark |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Washington Monument | Center of the Mall, 15th Street | The 555-foot obelisk lit against the sky; closed inside after 5 p.m. |
| 2. World War II Memorial | 17th Street, between the Monument and Lincoln | The fountains, 56 granite pillars and the Freedom Wall of 4,048 gold stars |
| 3. Vietnam Veterans Memorial | Constitution Gardens, just northeast of Lincoln | Small lights at the base of the wall and more than 58,000 names |
| 4. Lincoln Memorial | West end of the Mall | The 19-foot statue in the lit chamber; look back down the Reflecting Pool |
| 5. Korean War Veterans Memorial | Just southeast of Lincoln | 19 steel statues in low light and the Wall of Remembrance |
| 6. Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial | 1964 Independence Avenue SW, Tidal Basin | The 30-foot Stone of Hope, facing the water |
| 7. FDR Memorial | 1100 Ohio Drive SW, just under half a mile on | Four outdoor rooms, waterfalls and 22 carved quotations |
| 8. Jefferson Memorial | South side of the Tidal Basin | The 19-foot bronze statue in the rotunda, and the city across the water |
From the Jefferson Memorial, walk back north past the Washington Monument to Smithsonian station, or call a car. In spring, swap the order and start at the Tidal Basin while the cherry trees are lit by the lamps; our cherry blossom night note has the timing. How long does it take to walk the monuments in DC?
The full loop of the Mall memorials and the Tidal Basin is about 3.1 miles (5 km) and takes about 1 hour 15 minutes of pure walking. With time at each memorial, plan on 2.5 to 3 hours.
Pick the version that fits your evening and your feet:
| Walk | Distance | Time |
|---|---|---|
| Full loop: Mall memorials plus the Tidal Basin | About 3.1 miles (5 km) | About 1 hour 15 minutes walking; allow up to 3 hours |
| Tidal Basin Loop Trail only (MLK, FDR, Jefferson) | About 2 miles | 1 to 3 hours, per the National Park Service |
| MLK Memorial to FDR Memorial | Just under half a mile | A short, level stretch by the water |
| The whole Mall, Lincoln Memorial to the U.S. Capitol | About 2 miles one way | Add this only if you want the Capitol up close |
Add the walk from Smithsonian station to the Washington Monument at the start and back at the end, a few blocks each way. The Tidal Basin Loop Trail is level and wheelchair accessible, per the park service, which makes it the easiest night section. The Lincoln Memorial is the opposite: a long flight of steps from the Reflecting Pool up to the chamber.
On a guided night walk the pace is set for you. The sunset walking tour covers the Einstein, Vietnam, Lincoln, Korean War, MLK and World War II memorials in 2 hours and ends at the lit Washington Monument. Ride to Smithsonian station, which opens onto the Mall at 12th Street. Metro runs until about midnight Sunday to Thursday and until about 2 a.m. on Friday and Saturday nights; check the last train for your station.
Smithsonian is the station to use at both ends, because the west-end stations are a mile or more from the Lincoln Memorial. WMATA's own timetable for Smithsonian shows last trains from about 11:49 p.m. to 12:12 a.m. Monday to Thursday, and from about 1:47 to 2:12 a.m. on Friday and Saturday nights. A loop that starts after an early dinner finishes well inside those times.
- Driving: National Mall meters cost $2.30 an hour from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m., with a 3-hour limit at most meters, card or the ParkMobile app only. Hains Point in East Potomac Park has about 520 free spaces.
- Late parking: the park's rules bar parking in its public lots from 1 a.m. to 5 a.m., and East Potomac Park is gated shut at the same hours, so do not leave a car there past 1 a.m.
- Capital Bikeshare: $1 to unlock plus $0.15 a minute on a classic bike, with stations near the memorials. Walk the bike through the memorials; riding is not allowed inside them.
- The DC Circulator: its National Mall bus ended with the rest of the service on 31 December 2024, so older guides that send you there are out of date.

Where are the restrooms and water on the Mall at night?
The National Park Service lists restroom buildings at the Lincoln Memorial, the World War II Memorial, the MLK Memorial, the FDR Memorial and on both sides of the Reflecting Pool. It does not post night hours for them, so go when you see one open.
The park service's own notes are short. The Reflecting Pool North restroom is "the only restroom on this side of the Reflecting Pool", with the World War II and Lincoln memorials as the next chance, and it lists drinking water. Inside the Washington Monument there are no restrooms or water at all; those are at the Monument Lodge on 15th Street.
Carry a bottle anyway. "You can dehydrate in any season," the park service says, and a 3-mile loop on a warm evening goes through water fast. Fill it before you set out.

Comfortable shoes with treaded soles, layers for the evening chill, and something to keep you dry. Some of the memorial stones are slippery when wet, the park service warns.
The wet stone is the thing to plan for. Marble steps and granite plazas get slick after rain or dew, so stay on the paths and take the Lincoln steps slowly. Do not wade into the fountains at the World War II Memorial or elsewhere; the park service asks visitors not to.
Evening temperatures, from NOAA's 1991 to 2020 normals for Reagan National Airport:
- November: highs about 58°F, lows about 42°F (5°C). Sunset is at about 4:54 p.m. by mid-month.
- December to February: lows around 30 to 35°F (-1 to 1°C), and the wind off the Potomac makes the Lincoln end feel colder. Our winter night note covers it.
- Summer: a July evening is often still in the 70s°F, so dress light and drink often.
Taking photos? Handheld shots are fine, but the park's rules ban tripods in the designated memorial areas and ban drones across the whole park.

Can you do a free self-guided walking tour, and when is a guided tour easier?
Yes. The walk is free and the National Park Service even lists nighttime walks with a park ranger. A guided tour is easier when you want the stories, less walking, a group after dark or a ride back downtown.
Rangers answer questions at the memorials until 10 p.m. and run free talks and walks; the park's calendar lists what is on for your date. Planning your own loop gives you all the time you want at each stop.
Here is what the night tours do differently, per their listings:
- Walk with a guide: the sunset walking tour, 2 hours on foot from the Einstein Memorial at 2101 Constitution Ave NW, from $39.
- Ride, then walk: the Monuments by Moonlight trolley, 2.5 hours with a 30-minute stop at MLK and FDR and another at Lincoln, Vietnam and Korean War, from $59.95. The listing replaces its Iwo Jima stop with the World War II Memorial for now, because of a bridge closure.
- Cover the full loop on wheels: the night bike tour, about 4 easy, flat miles in 3 hours, with a few minutes on foot at each memorial, from $65.
- Small group, door to door: the small-group night tour in a 12-passenger van that stops at most sites, from $99.
Every one of them has free cancellation up to 24 hours before.
Ride between the memorials, then walk them: two 30-minute stops on a 2.5-hour guided night trolley.
Check dates for the Monuments by Moonlight trolleyWhen is the best time to start a night walk?
Start about 30 minutes before sunset. You see the memorials in the last light, watch the lights come on, and finish in the dark before the late chill.
Sunset in Washington runs from about 4:46 p.m. in early December to about 8:37 p.m. in late June. Daylight saving time ended on 1 November 2026, so evenings now come early: the sun sets at about 4:54 p.m. in mid-November and 4:47 p.m. on 30 November, and it is dark soon after 5 p.m.
Two timing tips. Reach the Lincoln end before 10 p.m. if you have questions for a ranger, since they are on duty until then. And keep the Tidal Basin for the end: the National Park Service suggests the early evening and morning hours as "beautiful and tranquil times to visit".
