Things to do in DC at night

The memorials are the big draw after dark, and they are open all night. Around them, a few museums stay open into the evening, the waterfronts fill up, and the river is at its best at sunset. Here is what stays open late and how to build an evening round it.

Most of Washington's big museums close at 5 or 5:30 p.m., which in winter is right around sunset. The evening belongs to other things: the lit memorials, two Smithsonian museums that open until 7 p.m., the new museum under the Lincoln Memorial, the waterfronts at the Wharf and Georgetown, and the river.

Below you will find which museums are open at night, which are free, where to go after dark, a sunset cruise, the White House at night, the night tours, and the seasonal events from now into 2027.

The quick answer

At night in DC, see the memorials (open 24 hours, lit, free), the Smithsonian American Art Museum and National Portrait Gallery (open until 7 p.m.), the Lincoln Memorial's new Undercroft museum (until 8 p.m. in winter, per Washingtonian), the Wharf and Georgetown waterfronts, and the White House from Lafayette Park. For the memorials with a guide, the Monuments by Moonlight trolley runs 2.5 hours, from $59.95.

What can you do in DC at night?

See the lit memorials on foot or on a night tour, visit a museum that opens late, eat on the Southwest waterfront or in Georgetown, take a sunset cruise on the Potomac, and look at the White House lit up.

A good DC evening has two halves. Before dark: a late museum, the river at sunset, or dinner. After dark: the memorials, which the National Park Service opens 24 hours a day, free. Rangers are at them until 10 p.m., and the park service lists nighttime walks with a park ranger among its free programs; the park's calendar has the dates.

A sample November evening: the National Portrait Gallery from about 4 p.m., dinner downtown at 6 p.m., then a night tour of the memorials. Dawn wrote after the trolley: "we learned so much, the monuments are beautiful lit up at night." (Apr 2026) Our best monuments at night guide picks the memorials to put first.

Which DC museums are free?

All the Smithsonian museums in DC are free, along with the National Zoo, and so is the National Gallery of Art. The memorials are free too, and only the Washington Monument and Ford's Theatre need timed tickets.

The Smithsonian runs 17 free museums in the DC area plus the zoo, ten of them on the Mall. A few free places do use timed tickets, and some carry a small booking fee:

  • Washington Monument: free; $1 per ticket booked on Recreation.gov, released at 10 a.m. 30 days ahead, or free same-day tickets at the Lodge on 15th Street from 8:45 a.m., subject to availability. Open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.; our Washington Monument tickets note has the details.
  • Lincoln Memorial Undercroft: free; $1 per ticket booked ahead.
  • Ford's Theatre: entries every half hour from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.; a $5 reservation fee per ticket booked ahead, with limited walk-up tickets.
  • U.S. Capitol: the Visitor Center is free; tours need passes.

The Smithsonian Castle, the red building on the Mall, is closed for its first major renovation in more than 50 years.

What stays open late in DC?

The memorials (all night), Metro (until about midnight on weeknights and 2 a.m. on Friday and Saturday), and the restaurants and bars of the Wharf, Georgetown and downtown.

Where to go after dark, beyond the Mall:

  • The Wharf: the Southwest waterfront at 760 Maine Ave SW, with restaurants, shops, concert venues, four public piers and a water taxi. Its calendar has the Coca-Cola Caravan at Market Square on 13 November 2026, 6 to 8:30 p.m., and a Christmas tree market from 27 November 2026.
  • Georgetown: the waterfront at Washington Harbour, where the Potomac sunset cruise leaves, with the Key Bridge just upriver.
  • Downtown and Penn Quarter: restaurants and theatres round the night-tour meeting points, and Ford's Theatre, which is still a working theatre.
  • The Kennedy Center: the main building closed around 4 July 2026 for about two years of renovation, with reopening expected in 2028. Free Millennium Stage concerts have carried on, and the Kennedy Center's own calendar lists them for November and December 2026; check the venue and time there.

Can you take a sunset cruise on the Potomac?

Yes. The 45-minute narrated sunset cruise leaves Washington Harbour in Georgetown and passes the Kennedy Center, the Watergate, the Lincoln Memorial and the Washington Monument, from $35.

The boat, the Nightingales, runs south along the river to the 14th Street bridges, then turns back to Georgetown, per the listing. There is a bar with light snacks for purchase and restrooms on board. Arrive 15 minutes early; it runs rain or shine, and it is not suitable for wheelchair users. Gary wrote: "It was perfect! We had a great time, and it was a beautiful evening with great views of the capital!" (Oct 2026)

It pairs well with a night tour. Take the cruise at sunset, eat in Georgetown, then see the memorials lit up on a later departure; the Potomac sunset cruise has the details, with free cancellation up to 24 hours before.

Can you see the White House at night?

Yes, from outside. Lafayette Park on the north side is the closest a pedestrian can get, and the Ellipse gives the south view, best from the Zero Milestone marker. The Secret Service may close either without notice.

The grounds of President's Park are open year-round, and the White House is lit at night. If the Ellipse is closed, the closest south view is from Constitution Avenue. Tours of the inside must be requested through a member of Congress or, for visitors from abroad, an embassy.

Several night tours include it. The small-group van and the 10-stop coach both list the White House as a stop; the sunset walk gives a view from the south; the trolley passes it. In December the National Christmas Tree on the Ellipse adds a reason to linger: the 2026 lighting is on 3 December.
